This five-lesson course focuses on Italian pronunciation and phonetics via the reading and analysis of famous Italian opera pieces.
The course is suitable for anyone engaged in opera singing, both amateur and professional, who wishes to learn or enhance their pronunciation of the Italian language. After an initial familiarization with the alphabet and the syllables – with special emphasis on more complex sounds such as “r”, “gli”, and “s/z” – the lesson will proceed to examine a selection of chosen opera pieces from the Italian tradition, focusing on the correct enunciation of the words and their subsequent musical adaptation.
No prior knowledge of Italian is required, as the course will be held in English and all materials will be both English and Italian, for an easier understanding. All participants will be provided with music scores and bilingual lyrics of all the pieces analyzed during the course.
Opera pieces that will be covered include:
- “O sole mio”, Di Capua, Mazzucchi
- “Caro mio ben”, Giuseppe Giordani
- “Libiam ne’ lieti calici”, Giuseppe Verdi
- “Va’ pensiero”, Giuseppe Verdi
