DESCRIPTION:Dear students\, members and friends of Dante Alighieri\, \nLet’s discover with Opera expert Peter Gordon all the secret behind one of the most performed operas in the world: Bizet’s Carmen. \nIf any opera belies the notion that this art form is somehow snobby and elitist\, it’s Carmen. This now famous story of the gypsy seductress and the fatally besotted soldier Don José combines drama that is both metaphorically and literally gut-stabbing with music that is popular in the best sense of the word: hummable tunes and melodies that go round in one’s head for days afterward. \nIn this session\, we’ll take a look at the story\, the music and the characters\, in particular Carmen: fiery\, thoughtless\, superstitious and completely irredeemable with no regard for anyone but herself\, and yet … t his is a woman who knows just who she is and who stands up for herself.
