ABOUT THE TALK

The Italian language has for centuries played an important international role in Europe and the Mediterranean, serving literature and culture in general (visual arts, architecture, etc.), as well as commerce and diplomacy. The peak of its spread coincided with the great age of the Renaissance, when Italian-style sonnets—often written directly in Italian—were composed in the courts of France, Spain, and England, and official communications between European powers and the Ottoman Empire were conducted in Italian. Meanwhile, simplified forms of the language served as a lingua franca across North African ports. The international success of Italian persisted in the centuries that followed, driven by commedia dell’arte and opera, and continues to this day through fields such as gastronomy, design, and fashion.

This talk will trace this fascinating history by highlighting, through selected case studies, how the Italian “genius” radiated abroad from a linguistic perspective. It will also explore the cross-cultural contacts and hybridizations between Italian language and culture and those of other regions—a fruitful encounter that has enabled, and continues to enable, Italian to spread as an instrument of peace, fostering ideas, projects, and creativity far beyond Italy’s borders.
